MAIN SUMMARY

Two Little Soldiers by Guy de Maupassant

Two Little Soldiers' Weekend

The two soldiers, Luc Le Ganidec and Jean Kerderen, were very good friends with each other. Among them, Jean Kerderen was a bit quiet and shy, while Luc Le Ganidec was carefree and open-minded. Every Sunday, both of them used to spend their holidays away from their barracks in the countryside. Both of them enjoyed their vacation a lot in a small wood located in the last part of Bezons. During their journey towards the Bezons, they walked so fast without talking. They used to stop for several minutes at Bezon's Bridge to enjoy the Seine River and its white, soaring sails. They would lean on the railing of the bridge to enjoy the view of the Seine River. This special river reminded them of their home. They would buy their essential provisions, like bread, wine, sausage, etc., from the shops after crossing the bridge. Finally, after crossing the village, they reached a small forest, an area that reminded them of their homeland, Plounivon. Both would enjoy a lot in that peaceful environment far away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

An Entry of a Young Milkman in Their Friendship:

One day, the two soldiers met a young milkmaid who was taking her cow to the pasture. The next Sunday, the milkmaid walked with her cow and talked to them. When she returned after feeding her cow, she shared her cow's milk with them. They talked about different things again. She also promised to meet both of them the next Sunday.

The following weekend, Jean Kerderen suggested to Luc Le Ganidec that they should also give the milkmaid a present. Both decided and bought a bonbon for her. When they met her the following Sunday, they were too shy to tell her about the present. In the end, Luc Le Ganidec told her about the present, and Jean Kerderen offered her bonbon chocolates. She was overjoyed to get candy from the soldiers. As the weeks passed, the milkmaid became a topic of conversation for both the soldiers in the barracks. Every time they talked about her, and after more meetings, these three people became very good friends with each other. The milkmaid also started providing them breakfast items in their meetings.

Cheat from Luc Le Ganidec's side:

Luc Le Ganidec began to leave the barracks over and over again. He left the barracks on Tuesday and came back quite late. On Friday, he again left the barracks. He borrowed money from Jean Carderen but did not give him any explanation regarding his leave. He left the barracks for several hours during the day and came back to the barracks at night. Jean was not aware of Luk's activities outside the barracks.

Jean Kerderen's state of jealousy and heartbreak:

The following Sunday, when the milkmaid appeared with her cow, she was overjoyed to see Luc Le Ganidec. She approached Luc Le Ganidec. She hugged and kissed him. She did not pay attention to Jean Kerderen. Luc Le Ganidec and Milkmaid both disappeared in the woods for a long time. Jean Kerderen, sitting alone, became quite despondent. He could not understand anything about their actions. He felt so heartbroken. He realised his liking for the milkmaid. He also came to know the facts behind Luk's act of leaving the barracks for several hours. He felt like a fool. When they returned, both lovers kissed once again. The milkmaid did not even give milk to Jean that day.

The misfortune of Jean Kerderen:

While returning to the barracks, Jean was feeling very upset. When they stopped just above the bridge, Jean Kerderen, very sad, leaned on the railing of the bridge. He was unable to balance his body on the railing in desperation. He suddenly fell into the river. Luc Le Ganidec panicked and shouted for help, but there was no one there. He saw Jean's head for the last time. After that, Jean's body disappeared into the water. Later that day, the sailors found his body. Luc Le Ganidec, so bewildered and saddened, told of Jean's accident in his barracks.
